Other Decor Items& the 60-30-10 Rule
One of the most important aspects to the painting trade is helping customers pick out a color. At Blast of Color Painting, we take the time to ensure that our customers are 110% certain of their color choices.
When deciding which colors you will use to paint a room or two, consider other decor items, What other colors are in the room? Take a look at your furniture, lamps, ceiling fans, flooring, window treatments, etc.
A suggestion to help you achieve the right balance would be to use what is called, the 60-30-10 rule. This is a timeless decorating rule. It can help you put a color scheme together very easily.
60% – This is the main color for your room. Using your living room as an example, the 60% would be most of your walls as well as large accent pieces like area rugs, and maybe your sofa. The idea is that the 60 percent color anchors the space and also serves as a backdrop for the remaining 40%. The paint color here is the most important.
30% – This is the secondary color. You’ll be using half as much of this color as your main color. Using the living room again as an example, this could be draperies, accent chairs, linens, painted furniture, or even creating an accent wall. The secondary color basically supports the main color but is different enough to set them apart and give the room interest.
The real fun comes with the accent color you’ll be adding next.
10% – This is your accent color. In the living room, this is your throw pillows, decorative accessories, and artwork. For a bedroom, this could be accent pillows on the bed, lamps on the bedside table, and candles on the nightstand. Your accent color can be pulled from artwork in the room, or from a printed fabric on larger items.
So there you have it. The 60-30-10 rule can make choosing color simple, and help you achieve balance when decorating a room. All of this is obviously led and driven by your wall paint colors.
